Editor’s Letter: Harvest preparations

During the growing season, I know tree nut growers are prioritizing crop production, and in doing so, pests, diseases, water requirements and soil and plant nutrients are at the top of your mind.

Walnut trials

Tree varieties are important to help combat some of the challenges faced with crop production, and in this issue we take a look at what has been going on at the Butte County Walnut Variety Trial to see how things are progressing with its research and its current findings.

Late summer challenges

As harvest time approaches, monitoring nut maturity, weather conditions, irrigation management, pest/disease, equipment and field preparation are all important. The article from Lenny Wells discusses the pertinent details growers should be aware of during this time.

Non-bearing almonds

In this issue, National Nut Grower had the opportunity to catch up with Cameron Zuber, who recently presented an informative session on non-bearing almonds and water and nutrients as part of The Young Orchard Irrigation and Nutrient Management workshop presented by the University of California Division of Agriculture & Natural Resources. Read the article to learn more about the water and nutrient management that is necessary in younger almond trees.

I also know you have to protect your crops from bird damage. Read more about this topic in my Q&A with Bird Gard on the best strategies to mitigate damage and to keep the feathered creatures from flocking into orchards.

Pearson Farm

Also in this issue, we are pleased to highlight a pecan and peach grower, Pearson Farm. See how this successful Georgia grower deals with technology and other challenges.
