Aug 19, 2024Meridian Growers notes a 33% increase in pistachio shipments over same period last year
Meridian Growers noted the pistachio industry is set for record-breaking shipping year, as shipments are 33% ahead of last year’s pace in its July pistachio shipment report.
“We began harvest in Arizona around August 15th and expect to start in California around August 26th. From what we have seen thus far, quality looks good but it is still too early to tell overall crop quality and size. However, we can say with certainty that the crop size will be less than last year,” the email from Jim Zion of Meridian Growers stated.
As the season draws to a close, the industry anticipates one of the lowest carryovers in years, particularly as 2024 is expected to be an off-crop year. Strong demand from China is likely to keep prices elevated. Rising demand for pistachio kernels has also contributed to higher prices throughout the year..
“With the smaller crop and good demand, please let us know as soon as possible what your needs will be this year so we can plan accordingly,” Meridian Growers’ email read. “We will have the capability of in-house pasteurizing and roasting in the 1st quarter of 2025 so please keep that in mind as you look over your needs for 1st and 2nd quarter 2025.”
