Dec 22, 2021Registration still open for January Texas pecan short course
Register for the Texas Pecan Short Course held near College Station, TX on January 24-27, 2022.
The Texas Pecan Short Course is in its 58th year of offering a comprehensive educational class for commercial pecan orchard management. The course is designed for people with no previous experience in growing pecans. We cover all facets of pecan orchard management from basic tree anatomy and physiology to annual budget planning.
The 2022 short course will be taught at the Texas A&M University (TAMU) HortTREC (Teaching Research & Education) facility, 8 miles from the TAMU main campus managed by personnel in the Texas A&M Department of Horticultural Sciences. HortTREC allows participants easy access to the TAMU Pecan Orchard, a research and teaching pecan orchard covering 56 acres and over 1,500 pecan trees ranging in age from four to 70 years. Portions of the short course will be taught in the orchard on subjects like tree planting, pruning and soil evaluation. Participants will be able to see commercial pecan equipment in operation.
The course is taught by Dr. Monte Nesbitt, Dr. Larry Stein, Dr. George Ray McEachern and other faculty and pecan industry representatives. Participants get to make a pecan variety board and receive a certificate of completion suitable for framing. Lunch will be served each day.
