$2M project to support U.S. tree nut exports
USDA announced a $2 million project to develop storage, pest-control and traceability tools aimed at reducing export barriers for U.S. tree nuts.
The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) announced a $2 million project to develop cost-effective tools to help U.S. tree nut handlers control pests and maintain product quality during postharvest storage.
The project is funded through the Assisting Specialty Crop Exports (ASCE) Initiative, which supports specialty crop producers facing barriers to overseas trade. The initiative covers fruits, vegetables, pulses, potatoes and tree nuts.
The funding opportunity focuses on low-oxygen storage and packaging systems for U.S. tree nuts, including phytosanitary traceability. USDA said the work is intended to address pest control and product quality while tree nuts are stored after harvest.
Awards are expected to be made in fiscal year 2027, pending approval of a fiscal year 2027 spend plan.
The project is part of a broader group of ASCE investments intended to expand market access and advance science-based trade standards for U.S. specialty crops.
