May 15, 2024American pistachio shipments surge, 2024 crop outlook positive
Meridian Growers released a promising report on April pistachio shipments, revealing a notable uptick in the American pistachio market. Jim Zion of Meridian Growers shared insights from the report, highlighting significant trends and forecasts for the industry.
“In April, we saw a robust 9% increase in pistachio shipments compared to last year,” said Zion, emphasizing the industry’s momentum. “Year-to-date, shipments have soared by an impressive 50%, indicating a strong start for American pistachios.”
International demand, particularly from Europe, China/Hong Kong, and emerging markets, continues to drive growth. However, Zion noted a significant rise in domestic shipments, signaling a positive shift for the American pistachio sector.
Reflecting on the recent International Nut Council (INC) conference in Vancouver, Zion described it as highly impactful, with key insights into the industry’s future. Projections for the 2024 crop estimate yields between 1.1 to 1.2 billion pounds, with minimal carryover from previous seasons.
“While anticipating a slight delay of 7-10 days in the 2024 harvest, we expect heightened demand for September and October shipments,” Zion explained. “Our new processing methods and access to early-harvested Arizona pistachios position us competitively to meet this demand.”
Expressing gratitude to industry colleagues for their engagement at the INC meeting, Zion encouraged ongoing collaboration to drive further growth in the American pistachio industry.
