May 27, 2022APG attends ‘Save Our Communities’ water rally
On May 6, the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act water rally meeting, entitled “Save Our Communities,” was hosted by 52 different agricultural organizations, community groups, and representatives at various local and state government levels. The water rally attracted hundreds of participants, all of whom continue to have concerns over the impact of SGMA on farmers, rural communities and employment, either on farms or farm-related jobs. Speakers from all walks of life – mayors, state legislators, education, law enforcement and farmers were all in attendance, explaining the impact lack of water would have in their communities.
American Pistachio Growers state lobbyist George Soares moderated the legislative panel. The goal is to attain a coordinated, bipartisan effort to work on short- and long-term solutions to the water crisis. Many speakers noted a need for more flexibility in implementing SGMA, funding for water storage projects and a different approach to the State’s current prioritization of water allocations.
Western Agricultural Processors Association hosted the event on behalf of the entire group.
