CoverSeal has introduced a tractor and farm equipment cover designed to help protect machinery from rodents, a growing problem in California nut orchards.

Rodent infestations caused an estimated $109 million to $311 million in losses and damage in California nut orchards last year, according to the Almond Board of California. The damage included crop losses, equipment repairs and machinery cleaning tied to rodent contamination.

The tractor cover measures 189 x 76 x 86 inches and uses CoverSeal’s patented Ground Seal technology. A flexible tube filled with sand runs around the bottom of the cover, creating a 360-degree seal without straps or bungee cords. The company said the cover is resistant to ground squirrels, roof rats, mice, snakes and other pests.

California produces 90% of the country’s tree nuts. The company said recent restrictions on rodenticides have added pressure for growers managing rodent populations.

“Farmers are now challenged with an influx of rodents that are wreaking havoc on their crops, infrastructure and equipment,” said Ken Huening, CoverSeal CEO.

The cover is made with DWR-coated polyester ripstop fabric and is designed to reflect 90% of sunlight. CoverSeal said the product has been lab tested to withstand winds up to 40 mph and can protect tractors from wildfire ash up to 300º F. The tractor cover is priced at $360 and includes a storage case.
