Pecan Tree Clinic set for April 5 in Wichita Falls, Texas

Pecan Tree Clinic will be held April 5 at the River Bend Nature Center, 2200 Third St., Wichita Falls, Texas.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service event will start with onsite registration at 5:30 p.m. The program will run from 6-8 p.m.

The cost is $10, payable at the door. Contact the AgriLife Extension office in Wichita Falls County at 940-716-8610 for additional information.

The program will cover basic information to maximize production for pecan trees, a favorite tree among homeowners and commercial producers in Texas. Texans grow around 70,000 acres of native and improved pecan trees across the state.

“Those with pecan trees should come join us at this clinic to maintain tree health and improve pecan production,” said David Graf, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent for Wichita County. “This will be an interactive session to be sure your questions are addressed.”

Pecan Tree Clinic topics

Monte Nesbitt, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension program specialist in horticulture, Bryan-College Station, is the featured speaker.

“Pecan is the highest acreage fruit crop in the state of Texas,” said Nesbitt. “It is an important source of primary commercial agricultural income, secondary income in diversified farms, and home enjoyment for many Texans.”

Nesbitt said producing a pecan crop takes seven months of culture – water, fertilizer and pest management.

“AgriLife Extension pecan clinics serve to bring pecan growers, both home and commercial, the latest recommendations and updates on how best to produce pecans suitable for marketing or home consumption,” he said.

Nesbitt will be discussing pecan-related care topics, including:

  • Improving Tree Health.
  • Pest Control and Fertilization.
  • The Do’s and Don’ts of Pruning.

The event will conclude with a question-and-answer session.

Additional general pecan information is available online in the 12-page Improved Pecans downloadable booklet.
