Prepare for wildfires: UC ANR offers essential tips

As California braces for a potentially severe fire season, the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) Fire Network emphasizes the importance of preparing both homes and agricultural operations.

The recent explosive growth of the Park Fire highlights the urgent need for proactive measures amid intense heat and dry conditions.

Agricultural operations face risk

Agricultural operations also face heightened risk. Farmers are advised to clear flammable materials around their properties, maintain firebreaks, and ensure that irrigation systems are functional. The UC ANR Fire Network’s website provides specific recommendations for protecting crops and livestock, including creating defensible space and managing field debris.

Mitigate fire risk in homes

Yana Valachovic, a forest advisor with UC Cooperative Extension, outlined simple tasks to mitigate fire risk. Homeowners should:

  • Clean debris from roofs and gutters.
  • Remove combustibles from the area within five feet of their homes.
  • Secure vents with fine metal-mesh screens.
  • Check garage door seals for ember resistance.
  • Replace wooden fences near buildings with noncombustible materials.

Pre-evacuation tasks

For agricultural operations

Farmers should also prepare an evacuation checklist tailored to their operations:

  • Secure livestock: Ensure animals are ready for transport and have access to water.
  • Protect equipment: Move tractors, generators and other equipment to a safe location if possible.
  • Safeguard crops: Identify priority crops and ensure they are as protected as possible.
  • Document assets: Have records of important documents, insurance information, and property details readily accessible.
  • Prepare emergency contacts: Have contact information for farm workers, suppliers and emergency services.

For homeowners

As evacuation warnings may precede orders, Valachovic suggested these pre-evacuation tasks:

  • Close all windows, pet doors, and skylights.
  • Move outdoor items indoors and secure gates.
  • Relocate barbecue propane tanks.
  • Prepare water buckets and hoses in visible locations.
  • Dress in protective clothing and pack a “go bag” in your vehicle.

California residents should think ahead and complete emergency preparations.

Smoke risks

Smoke from wildfires poses significant health risks and can affect agricultural productivity. Farmers should also consider using air purifiers in enclosed spaces and taking steps to protect sensitive crops from smoke damage.

Katie Low, statewide coordinator for UC ANR’s Fire Network, advises monitoring air quality and minimizing outdoor activity. For more information on clean air, visit visit the California Air Resources Board’s “Smoke Ready California” page.
