The California Walnut Board (CWB) has appointed Dr. Saarah Kuzay as director of research and technical affairs, where she will oversee the organization’s production and postharvest research programs.

In the role, Kuzay will help guide research priorities focused on improving walnut quality and addressing challenges across the supply chain, including kernel color, yield and flavor. She will also evaluate investments in genetics, plant breeding, farm management and handling practices, along with factors affecting storage and distribution.

Kuzay will work with the CWB Research Committee and industry stakeholders to support ongoing efforts such as nematode control and identifying cost-effective alternatives to fungicides and pesticides amid tightening regulations. She will also lead the Retail Quality Improvement Program, which analyzes walnut quality at retail to identify opportunities for improvement.

Kuzay earned a doctorate in horticulture and agronomy with an emphasis in genetics and biotechnology from the University of California, Davis, in 2021. Her research background includes plant breeding and applied field trials, along with experience in data science, grant development and product development for export markets.

“Dr. Kuzay’s technical expertise, strong experience in evaluating and executing applied research, and proven ability to translate science into practical grower and product solutions make her an exceptional fit for this role,” said Robert Verloop, executive director and CEO of the California Walnut Board and Commission. “Her experience in working with diverse, cross-functional teams of experts will provide strong leadership as we look to make California walnuts craved around the globe.”

Kuzay will work alongside Joe Grant, CWB director of research, who plans to retire in August after joining the organization in 2016. Grant led the board’s production research program and expanded collaboration with scientists to support grower and processor needs.

“We applaud Joe’s extensive contribution and dedication to walnut research,” Donald Norene, past chairman of the CWB Production and Post Harvest Research committee, said. “He is attentive to the concerns of growers and handlers, and aligned research priorities on projects to deliver solutions that support industry challenges.”
