Sym-Agro Inc. and Biofungitek SL have entered into a U.S. distribution agreement for Biofungitek’s new fungicide, Berezi, the companies announced March 3.

Berezi is labeled for control of powdery mildew, botrytis and other diseases in fruit and vegetable crops. The product combines two active ingredients — potassium carbonate and thyme oil — which the companies say work synergistically to control fungal pathogens.

The fungicide is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and registered by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation for use in California and other Western states.

According to the companies, Berezi uses potassium carbonate rather than potassium bicarbonate, a common active ingredient in contact fungicides. The change is intended to reduce visible residue and lower the risk of phytotoxicity compared with standard potassium bicarbonate products.

The addition of thyme oil provides a second mode of action, targeting fungal cell susceptibility and potentially allowing for lower use rates, the companies said. Berezi is also formulated to mix readily in spray tanks and remain in solution during application.

“This innovative formulation combining a proven technology with an essential oil creates a powerful new biochemical solution for growers,” said Peter Bierma, president of Sym-Agro. “Growers will appreciate this new effective fungicide option to add to their toolbox this coming season.”

Sym-Agro, headquartered in Visalia, distributes crop protection products for specialty and high-value crops. Biofungitek, based in Derio, Spain, develops biological and biorational crop protection products and is a subsidiary of Goizper Group.
