Oct 9, 2024UC Extension urges growers to focus on irrigation, pruning, pest control
California nut and fruit growers should prepare for winter dormancy with a postharvest management plan, according to the UC Cooperative Extension’s Fruit & Nut newsletter.
The report emphasized the importance of evaluating tree health, soil moisture and irrigation needs to ensure strong bud development for next season.
“Proper irrigation is critical, even post-harvest, to avoid stress on trees,” the newsletter noted. It also recommends monitoring for nutrient deficiencies, as they can significantly affect tree vitality. The report stresses that growers should consider applying potassium and nitrogen to support tree health before dormancy.
Pruning is another key area of focus. The newsletter advised growers to prune trees to improve air circulation and reduce disease risk.
“Winter pruning helps manage tree structure and potential for infections,” according to the report.
Additionally, the newsletter highlighted pest management as a critical component of post-harvest practices. Growers should keep an eye out for potential infestations and use appropriate treatment strategies to prevent carryover into the next growing season.
