Almond hull powder earns GRAS status for human food use
Almond Hull Powder has received GRAS status for human food use. Learn more on about potential new markets for almond hulls beyond livestock feed.
Almond Hull Powder (AHP) has been determined to be Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for use in human food following a review by an independent expert panel, potentially opening new market opportunities for almond hulls beyond traditional livestock feed uses.
According to the review, the panel evaluated a more than 180-page dossier covering manufacturing methods, toxicology, projected consumption levels and contaminant exposure. The panel concluded AHP is safe for its intended food applications, and the findings have been submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The ingredient can be used in products including baked goods, cereals, beverages, bars and nutritional foods. Almond hulls historically have been used primarily in livestock rations, where market demand is closely tied to dairy and feed sectors.
The expert review found no safety concerns related to toxicology, genotoxicity or environmental contaminants at intended use levels. The report also stated that projected consumption levels remained well below thresholds associated with adverse effects.
AHP is produced using existing commercial food-processing methods, including sorting, cleaning, thermal drying and milling.
The determination could allow food manufacturers to evaluate almond hull-derived ingredients without conducting independent safety reviews, potentially expanding demand into functional food and nutrition markets. The report also highlighted sustainability benefits tied to broader use of almond byproducts.
Industry stakeholders said the development could help diversify end uses for almond hulls and create additional long-term value streams for growers.
