California almond shipments totaled 219.8 million pounds in April, down 8.8% from a year earlier, while exports continued to outpace last year’s pace overall, according to Blue Diamond’s May market update.

April exports reached 167.3 million pounds, a 10.9% decline from the same month last year, but export shipments for the crop year remained 1.3% ahead at 1.55 billion pounds. Domestic shipments were down 1.3% in April at 52.6 million pounds, while year-to-date domestic shipments fell 14.4% to 444 million pounds.

India imported 31.6 million pounds during April, down from 45.9 million pounds a year earlier as warmer temperatures reduced consumption. Combined shipments to China, Hong Kong and Vietnam increased 2.65% year to date, supported by stronger movement into China and Hong Kong.

Europe’s year-over-year growth rate eased from 7% to 4%, though Spain, Italy and Germany continued to post gains. In the Middle East, trade activity remained affected by conflict in Iran and higher transportation costs, while Turkey shipments increased 35% and Pakistan shipments rose 202%.

Total industry commitments stood at 517 million pounds, down 1.6% from last year. Uncommitted inventory increased 4.2% to 605.8 million pounds.

Blue Diamond projected the 2026 California almond crop between 2.675 billion and 2.72 billion pounds, with a midpoint estimate of 2.69 billion pounds. The estimate aligns closely with the USDA subjective estimate of 2.7 billion pounds.
