Meridian Growers releases August pistachio market update

Meridian Growers sent an email that detailed the American pistachio industry shipments, which total 1.18 billion pounds for the 2023-24 crop year, marking a 31% increase over the previous year.

According to Meridian Growers, this is the highest shipment total ever, driven largely by export demand.

“We are into our 4th week of harvest and this crop is later than last year and very uneven. Many growers have yet to start harvest, and the nuts are too green to shake. What we have received has been of excellent quality and size, but it does appear this crop will be on the lighter side,” wrote Jim Zion from Meridian Growers in the email. “In addition, on the Kerman orchards we have received, the % of closed shell is averaging 15-18% which is one the highest we have seen in recent years. We have had some blocks go as high as 30%.”

Zion also shared that processors have largely withdrawn from the market as they await clearer data on crop size, which is expected in the next two weeks. Prices are anticipated to be set by early October, kicking off a wave of purchasing activity.
