Mar 19, 2025U.S. tree nut exports to Taiwan up as market demand grows
Taiwan’s demand for U.S. tree nuts grew significantly in 2024, with imports rising 19% to nearly 13,000 metric tons, valued at $76 million, according to a recent USDA Foreign Agricultural Service report. The U.S. remains the dominant supplier, holding a 66% market share, as competitive pricing and shifting consumer preferences drive growth.
Almonds: Market leader with consistent demand
Almonds continue to be the most widely consumed tree nut in Taiwan, leading in both volume and value. The U.S. is the sole supplier, providing nonpareil and carmel varieties in various forms, including whole kernels, slivers, slices, diced and almond powder. The report attributes the steady demand to Taiwan’s health-conscious consumers, particularly those aged 45-74, who prioritize premium-quality nuts.
Pistachios: Rapid growth in popularity
Pistachio exports to Taiwan increased 44% in 2024, reaching 2,617 metric tons. The rise is credited to lower prices from the 2023 U.S. harvest and the nut’s cultural significance, as pistachios are a popular festive gift during the Chinese New Year. Nearly all pistachios imported into Taiwan come from the U.S., with Iran holding less than 1% of the market.
Walnuts: Facing increased competition from China
Taiwan imported roughly 4,600 metric tons of U.S. walnuts in 2024, valued at $22 million. While U.S. walnuts, particularly Chandler light-colored halves, remain the industry benchmark, China has begun aggressively exporting walnuts, capturing a 9% market share. The report warns that rising prices for California walnuts could push price-sensitive buyers toward Chinese alternatives.
Pecans: Strong growth but low awareness
Pecan imports climbed 91% year-over-year, reaching 457 metric tons. The U.S. remains the sole supplier, with Taiwan primarily consuming pecans as snacks. Despite the significant growth, consumer awareness of pecans’ distinct taste and culinary applications remains low. The report notes that the Chinese translation for pecans is often confused with walnuts, potentially impacting market expansion.
Hazelnuts: Niche market with growth potential
Taiwan’s hazelnut imports rose 42% in 2024, though total volume remains modest at under 400 metric tons. Turkey is the exclusive supplier. Hazelnuts are primarily used in snack nut mixes and bakery applications, often paired with chocolate.
Evolving consumer preferences and market trends
The report highlights that 60% of tree nuts imported into Taiwan are used for snack processing, while 40% go into bakery applications. Taiwan’s aging population and growing health consciousness continue to drive demand, with a preference for lightly roasted, minimally processed nuts. Manufacturers are also introducing innovative products, such as whiskey-infused walnuts and pistachios, nut-based spreads, and premium gift boxes, to attract younger and high-end consumers.
