U.S. pistachio industry sees record growth in 2023/2024 crop year

The U.S. pistachio industry achieved significant milestones during the 2023/2024 crop year, with global demand increasing and growers processing a record-breaking crop.

According to the Administrative Committee for Pistachios (ACP), favorable weather conditions, adequate water availability and low pest pressure contributed to a successful harvest.

“Handlers have been able to process a record crop and exceed consumer demand for high quality,” the ACP noted in its report.

The 2023 pistachio crop yielded 1.492 billion pounds, bringing the total gross inventory, combined with carryover from the previous year, to 1.65 billion pounds.

Shipments for the crop year reached an all-time high of 1.18 billion pounds, with exports accounting for 78% of the total. Export shipments grew by 6% over the previous year, totaling 931 million pounds.

International markets

China remained the largest international market for U.S. pistachios, importing more than 307 million pounds, or 33% of total exports. Other key export destinations included Turkey, Mexico, and Canada. The top 10 markets combined represented 74% of total export shipments, with 686 million pounds sent overseas.

Domestic shipments

Domestically, shipments increased slightly, totaling 250 million pounds. The ACP reported a carryover of 184 million pounds of pistachios as the industry moves into the 2024/2025 crop year. Early reports from the ongoing harvest indicate exceptional quality, with more details on the new crop expected in early October.

The ACP, which was established in 2004, oversees the regulation of quality for domestically shipped pistachios and monitors aflatoxin levels. The committee does not engage in marketing or sales activities but focuses on food safety and quality standards for the pistachio industry. For more information on ACP, visit acpistachios.org.
