Mar 3, 2025California Walnut Board Seeks Nominations for Board Positions
The California Walnut Board (CWB) has opened nominations for positions on its governing board, inviting established and next-generation walnut growers and handlers to play a key role in shaping the future of the industry.
Nominations are being accepted for board members and alternates for the 2025-2027 term, which begins on September 1, 2025, and runs through August 31, 2027.
Walnut growers interested in nominating their peers can submit petitions to name their preferred candidates. Ballots listing eligible candidates for grower positions will be mailed in mid-April, and growers will vote for two members and two alternates for their district, as well as one member and one alternate for a statewide position. The nominees with the most votes will be submitted to the Secretary of Agriculture for appointment consideration.
“Two years ago, the industry created a strategic plan to move forward, and while we’ve made progress, there’s still more work to be done,” said Robert Verloop, CWB executive director. “We’re seeking leaders who can think beyond their individual operations to collaborate with us for industry success.”
The CWB is especially encouraging younger growers to get involved in leadership roles. “We’re looking to attract the next generation of industry leadership who are ready to roll up their sleeves and help shape the future,” said Verloop. “Their fresh perspectives and energy can help shape the future and drive positive change as multi-generational family farms evolve.”
California Walnut Board Member responsibilities
Board members will be responsible for guiding the industry’s strategic direction, representing regional and statewide interests, and overseeing governance. They will also play a pivotal role in executing the CWB’s 2023 strategic plan, which focuses on six priorities:
- Product quality
- Global sales and marketing
- Innovation
- Sustainability
- Research
- Revitalizing the board and commission
Walnut industry leaders who cannot commit to board service can still contribute through CWB committees highlighting marketing, production and post-harvest research, issues management, and grades and standards.
