September pistachio shipments rise as smaller crop tightens outlook

U.S. pistachio shipments totaled 61.8 million pounds in September, up from 54.5 million pounds during the same month last year, according to the latest report from the Administrative Committee for Pistachios (ACP).

Exports led the increase, reaching 42.1 million pounds, compared to 32.9 million pounds in September 2024. Domestic shipments dipped slightly to 19.8 million pounds, down from 21.6 million pounds a year ago.

As of Sept. 30, the estimated marketable inventory stood at 1.20 billion pounds, supported by 1.06 billion pounds of new crop receipts. However, handlers report that total 2025 crop receipts are below expectations, with the incoming crop coming in smaller than initial projections.

Quality concerns emerge

According to the APC report, the final third of the 2025 crop is showing lower quality compared to earlier deliveries, raising concerns about availability later in the marketing year. The report also indicated that the smaller crop and declining quality could tighten supplies as the season progresses.

Export demand remains strong

Despite the lighter crop, export demand remains robust. Europe and Asia continued to drive growth, with both regions showing notable year-over-year gains. Shipments to Europe rose to 17.8 million pounds, while Asia reached 12.2 million pounds, supported by strong movement to Vietnam, Hong Kong and Italy.

The Middle East and Africa region also saw an increase, with shipments climbing to 7.1 million pounds, compared to 5.0 million pounds last year.

Market outlook

The combination of lower receipts, quality concerns and strong export activity suggests a tightening supply situation as the season progresses. While early shipment data signals solid global demand, reduced availability could shape market conditions in the coming months.

The next shipment report from the ACP is expected mid-November and will reflect October shipment activity.
