Jul 8, 2025UC Cooperative Extension to host Walnut Field Day on July 18
University of California Cooperative Extension is hosting a Walnut Field Day on Friday, July 18, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at a demonstration orchard located at 166 Pleasant Grove Road in Rio Oso, California. The event will focus on both whole orchard recycling and rootstock trial evaluation.

The location features a fifth-leaf Chandler walnut orchard planted on four clonal rootstocks — RX1, VX211, Vlach and Grizzly — on top of blocks of whole orchard recycling (WOR) chips. Attendees will see firsthand how these rootstocks perform in the same orchard environment.
Brent Holtz, UCCE farm advisor, will present on WOR practices and strategies for nutrient management following recycling. Clarissa Reyes, UCCE orchard advisor, along with Cliff Buemel from Agromillora CA, will discuss the characteristics and performance of each rootstock on site.
The grower-focused field day offers a valuable opportunity to engage directly with UC Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources specialists and observe applied research in action.
Participants can earn 1.5 continuing education units through the Certified Crop Adviser program. Online registration is required by July 16. For further information, contact Clarissa Reyes at clareyes@ucanr.edu or call (530) 433‑4301.
