Oct 29, 2024California walnut crop update optimistic with strong quality, high demand
The California Walnut Commission has provided an optimistic mid-harvest update on the 2024 walnut crop, reporting good progress and strong quality across varieties, including the popular Chandler variety, which makes up over 65% of industry acreage.
This year’s milder summer temperatures contributed to the crop’s excellent condition, with the Chandler variety showing ideal color and quality at its harvest peak.
“Quality of walnuts this year is very good and meets the high expectations of our global buyers,” said Gary Thiara, president and CEO of Empire Nut Company.
The walnut industry has employed advanced optical sorting technology to ensure only high-quality walnuts make it to market, removing imperfect walnuts before the final packing.
Demand for California walnuts is robust, with early orders already being shipped globally. The 2024 estimated crop size is 670,000 tons, enough to meet strong market demand while supporting California’s export goals. The California Walnut Commission has also reinforced its commitment to food safety, with walnuts grown, harvested and processed under strict federal and state regulations.
The Commission aims to broaden global market outreach and build excitement for California walnuts, which are recognized for both nutrition and quality. Official production figures for the 2024 crop will be released in January 2025.
Established in 1987, the California Walnut Commission represents over 4,600 growers and nearly 70 handlers. California remains the leader in walnut production, accounting for more than 99% of walnuts grown in the U.S.
