Oct 18, 2024Key Technology launches new optical sorter for nut processors
Key Technology unveiled its new COMPASS optical sorter for nut processors at Pack Expo in Las Vegas.
The system was designed to improve product quality and profitability by identifying and removing defects and foreign material such as shells, rocks and wood.
The COMPASS system aims to simplify sorting operations while maintaining high accuracy and throughput. According to Key Technology, this sorter is ideal for handling a variety of nuts, including almonds, pistachios, and walnuts. The system can sort based on color and shape, ensuring that products meet strict quality standards.
“The message from nut processors is that other optical sorters on the market are overly complex and difficult to use. That’s why we designed COMPASS – to simplify operation, sanitation, and maintenance while delivering consistent sort performance,” said Jack Lee, president of Duravant’s food sorting and handling solutions group.
COMPASS uses advanced sensor technology, including visible-infrared sensors and shortwave infrared (SWIR) InGaAs sensors, to detect defects and foreign materials. The system also features recipe-driven operation, allowing processors to customize settings for different nut types and quality requirements. Key Technology claims that new operators can learn to use the system in under 30 minutes.
The machine’s open design, with no moving parts, reduces the cost of ownership by minimizing maintenance needs. It also includes Key Discovery, a data analytics tool that provides insights into production line performance and quality trends.
