Oct 29, 2024Ohalo launches first self-fertile Nonpareil almond variety
Ohalo has released FruitionOne, a self-fertile Nonpareil almond variety, which will allow growers to plant Nonpareil almonds without pollenizer trees.
This development aims to simplify orchard management, reduce costs and support sustainability efforts.
A new powerful solution

Nonpareil almonds are valued for quality but typically require pollenizer trees, adding complexity and cost. With FruitionOne, Ohalo addressed this challenge, providing growers a solution that reduces reliance on commercial bee hives and minimizes risks tied to unpredictable weather and declining pollinator populations.
Dave Friedberg, CEO of Ohalo, emphasized the industry-wide impact of this development.
“The U.S. almond industry is under increasing pressure to meet growing demand for high-quality almonds while growers are challenged to consistently meet their financial needs and consumers are demanding more sustainable practices,” Friedberg said. “FruitionOne offers a powerful solution enabling higher productivity with fewer resources, benefiting consumers, growers and the environment.”

After four years of dedicated research and development, Ohalo has announced the completion of its USDA Regulatory Status Review process for FruitionOne with availability for early orders in late 2026 and first commercial deliveries beginning in 2027.
FruitionOne plantings underway
The first FruitionOne trial orchard plantings are underway in California.
FruitionOne aims to improve orchard efficiency, as growers can plant only Nonpareil trees, enhancing yields and reducing costs associated with managing separate pollenizer rows. Additionally, the single-variety planting boasts the ability to streamline harvest process, potentially reducing labor and equipment needs by 30%.
Founded in 2019, Ohalo focuses on breeding technology and sustainability, developing plant varieties that boost yield, resilience and genetic diversity in crops.
