UC, Almond Board sign MOU to boost innovation, sustainability in almond industry

The University of California (UC) and the Almond Board of California have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work together on improving almond industry practices, sustainability and new varietal development.

The agreement was unveiled Sept. 10 at UC Merced. Under the MOU, efforts will include demonstration plots at UC Merced’s Experimental Smart Farm, focusing on irrigation automation, regenerative agriculture, and development of new almond varieties and rootstocks.

“This initiative is designed to accelerate the adoption of sustainable farming practices, improve water and soil management, and support weather adaptation strategies for California’s almond growers,” Sebastian Saa, Almond Board associate director of agricultural research, said in a UC ANR news release.

Josette Lewis, vice president and scientific chief of the Almond Board, said the agreement between the organizations “marks a new chapter for our industry and our communities. Together, we are laying the foundation for a future where almond production is not only more productive but also more resilient and sustainable.”

The MOU also includes a workforce development component. The Almond Board will award three scholarships for UC Merced students to attend the Almond Conference in Sacramento this December, offering the students opportunities to engage with industry leaders.

Joshua Viers, associate vice chancellor of interdisciplinary research at UC Merced, said, “We’re very excited that our students are going to be exposed to these new ideas and be able to work on the farm and work with the Almond Board in this new capacity.”

The MOU will also benefit farmers by providing access to emerging technologies, educational programs, and training on sustainability, climate resilience and resource management.

Lewis added, “We believe that by investing in students, supporting research and working together across institutions, we can create lasting impact not just for our industry, but for the Central Valley and all of California.”
